What Do You Know?

Have you ever felt like you were at a total loss for what to do in your life situation? For the last few weeks we have had no idea what the next day held. All the wisdom and experience that we have meant nothing. We don't even feel like we have control over what the next step is. We didn't have enough wisdom to know how to plan and we can't even offer much advise to others.

It is a helpless feeling to be be powerless over our circumstances and even fearful of what the future holds financially, emotionally and relationally. I read an article soon after we discovered that Josh had leukemia that it was a desease that effected the entire family. The article said that even if you have a strong marriage, you will face enormous challenges. Even with health insurance it will effect your finances. And we have found much of that to be true. It is hard to discuss it with close friends and family who ask regularly "how are you doing?" Not because we are trying to keep a "stiff upper lip", but because most days we have a hard time trying to figure out the things for that day, and we don't know what tomorrow holds.

Again this morning God spoke encouraging words to me through scripture. Reading a devotional about 1 Corinthians 1, I was reminded that God didn't call me to be His child because of all that I had to offer. It is so easy to begin thinking about how much we have to offer God. Sometimes we even start wondering what He would do without us. But the truth is, He didn't choose me because of my wealth, or knowledge or skills or education or (you name it). As a matter of fact, anything that I think I have to offer is like dirty rags to Him.

So when I read these verses in Paul's letter to the church in Corinth I was reminded that it wasn't who I was that made me appealing to God. It was who He is.

1 Cor 1

26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God.

30 God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself. Christ made us right with God; he made us pure and holy, and he freed us from sin. 31Therefore, as the Scriptures say, “If you want to boast, boast only about the Lord.”

We all like to feel important, needed, irreplaceable. But in Gods eyes, He doesn't need us to get His work done, He chose us to show that He could do amazing things with average and unimpressive people. Every day God continues to show me that He is getting the job done without me, but He chooses to use me so that people will see what a gracious and loving God He is.

Josh's blood counts are looking better today after his 2 units of blood and 1 unit of platelets. He continues to feel good and got up a walked around quite a bit yesterday. He is seeing Gods faithfulness through Gods people and I see his faith growing daily. Our daughter Sarah got on a plane this morning to spend 2 weeks with my mom and dad in New Jersey. We miss her already but are glad she gets to spend some time with family.

Thank you for your continued prayers. You are on our hearts and in our prayers. Don't worry about what you know or what you have. Watch and see what God is doing around you and through you to change your world for His glory.

  3. Hi, Brian, Ilene, and Josh. Sarah's been here for only a few hours now, but already she's immersed in the Walton side of her family. Doug, Kim, and I took her to a couple Phila. sites (including the Liberty Bell) on our way back from PHL. Uncle Stan and Aunt Lorraine came for dinner (Sharon, Scott, Jared, and Nate too), we went for a walk together around PBU, and just hung out, laughing when Jared and Nate made shark hats for us all to wear tomorrow to the aquarium (so we'd get a discount). :)

I'm praying, while Sarah's here, that she'll feel a part of the bigger Walton family and enjoy a change in scenery even though her heart might still be back with you all in Houston.

Love you all ... and praying for you. Laurie
